Diane Sarna first learned about Hearts of Hope when she found a heart hanging from a tree outside the public library in Newtown, CT, following the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy in December, 2012.
As a Hearts of Hope Chapter was formed in Spring, 2013, Diane began attending monthly "Paint with a Purpose" nights, and after her first delivery of hearts to a local police station, wanted more opportunities like that.
“When I make a delivery to people in Pittsburgh, Parkland, or a local hospital, and I say where I’m from- the recipients know that I understand their grief. My hope is that our hearts send a strong message of hope and healing, and I heal too in the process of giving.”
Diane has been teaching for 30+ years and is currently a high school English and ESOL teacher in Westchester County, NY. When not in the classroom, Diane loves to run writing workshops and bring her students on community service trips to build homes in Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic. She is passionate about assisting organizations like Bridges to Community, Simply Smiles, AFS International and was just asked to be on the board for GraceWorks which funds health and educational projects in the developing world. She also volunteers at a local homeless shelter, food drives/distribution, and leads service projects for teens at her temple. In her “free time” Diane studies Spanish and teaches aqua fitness.
She has been married for 32 years, has two adult biological daughters, a third daughter through the Fresh Air Fund, and a rescue dog who loves to hike with her and her husband.
